Africa-Press – Nigeria. Former Governor of Imo State, Achike Udenwa, has said that the Southeast should have six states just like other geo-political zones in the country.
Udenwa made this statement on Monday in an interview on Arise Television monitored.
He said that the region has lost a lot of benefits accrued to it.
His comment is coming following several calls for the creation of an additional state in the region to make it equal with other geo-political zones of the country.
The Joint Committee of the Senate and House of Representatives on the Constitution approved the creation of an additional state in the Southeast to tackle the long-standing agitation over the region’s perceived marginalisation in the nation’s political structure.
“This is a very topical issue which has been on the burner for a very long time to give the Southeast six states. We know that every other zone in this country has six states, and the Northwest has seven.
“The Southeast has lost quite a lot in terms of benefits accorded to it, including the loss of three senatorial seats, which could have come to them, as well as in the sharing of federal revenue and other opportunities.
“Be that as it may, it would be nice if the current National Assembly could create the states we have been advocating for, which could have been done a very long time ago,” the ex-governor said.
