Africa-Press – Nigeria. The Taraba State Command of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria, VGN, has announced heightened security measures to curb rising criminal activities as the yuletide festive season approaches.

Speaking at a press briefing in Jalingo on Wednesday, the State Operations Commandant of the VGN, Munir Bello Abubakar, said the directive followed instructions from the organisation’s National Headquarters, led by the National Commandant, Dr Usman Mohammed Jahun.

According to Abubakar, the move is aimed at addressing the surge in crime typically recorded during the festive months.

He noted that incidents such as kidnapping, theft, phone snatching and assault tend to increase during this period, making it necessary for security actors—particularly those closest to the grassroots—to intensify vigilance.

Abubakar highlighted that the VGN, known for its rapid response and widespread community presence, has been instrumental in restoring relative calm in Jalingo and surrounding communities.

He commended the Taraba State Government, under Governor Agbu Kefas, for its support which, he said, has significantly strengthened the group’s operations.

“In recent times, residents could hardly sleep with their two eyes closed due to kidnappings and phone snatching. But today, with assistance from the state government, we are seeing noticeable improvements,” Abubakar said.

The commandant also appealed to members of the public to cooperate with the VGN by providing timely information and reporting suspicious activities before they escalate.

He reiterated that the VGN, as a voluntary and non-profit organisation, relies heavily on community support to function effectively.

He added that the group would continue to work in synergy with conventional security agencies in the state to ensure a peaceful and safe environment for residents during and beyond the festive season.

“As we enter the period of celebration, we urge everyone to stay vigilant and security conscious so as not to fall victim to avoidable incidents,” Abubakar pleaded.
