Zamfara Assembly calls for reopening of public, private schools

Africa-Press – Nigeria. The Zamfara State House of Assembly on Tuesday in its plenary passed a resolution for the state government to reopen both state-owned and private schools as parents are agitating that their children have been out of school for long.

The motion was moved by Hon. Yusuf Alhassan Kanoma representing Maru North and the chairman, House standing Committee on Basic, Secondary and Non-formal Education and seconded by Hon Aliyu Namaigora Danjibga representing Tsafe West constituency.

In his submission, Kanoma noted that the continued closure of schools in the state will be doing more harm than good in every facet of human endeavour in the state.

The lawmaker said that there is an urgent need to consider reopening schools to avoid producing a bunch of illiterates that will lead to other catastrophic organizations in the near future.

Kanoma further affirmed that since there is relative peace being enjoyed in some parts of the state that led to the reopening of some weekly markets and restoration of telecommunication networks in the state, there is the compelling need for the state government to reconsider re-opening schools in some locations in Gusau and other selected local government areas of the state.

“The students were not supposed to have been kept out of school for so long. So the government has to consider reopening public and private schools in the state” he added.

In their separate remarks, Nura Dahiru Sabon Birnin Dan Ali, Aliyu Namaigora Danjibga, Sani Dahiru Adabka and the deputy speaker, Musa Bawa Musa Yankuzo unanimously agreed with the motion moved by their colleague.

They called for a total reopening of schools, while the House leader, Hon. Faruk Musa Dosara said extra caution should be taken on the reopening of schools initiatives in order to avoid security lapses of the past.

According to him, before embarking on this serious exercise, concrete arrangements between the coordinating security agencies, vigilante groups, the Ministry of Education as well as host communities must be involved to ensure this safe school initiative in the state.

In his ruling, the Speaker of the House, Nasiru Mu’azu Magarya, while commending the foresight of the sponsor of the motion. Kanoma for drawing the government’s attention to reopening and safe school initiative ruled that public schools should be reopened but in batches, meaning the government should do so by merging some schools only in the headquarters of senatorial districts of the state.

The Speaker, therefore, directed the secretariat of the House to convey the House resolution to the Secretary to the State Government for implementation with immediate effect.
