Africa-Press – Rwanda. The transfer market is still open until August but some top names in the Rwandan football are still looking for new clubs as they remain free agents after seeing off their contracts at the end of the season.
A host of top players are out of contract but they could potentially spark the interest from Rwanda Premier League clubs.
Weekend Sport looks at some top players who are without clubs and could make some moves in the ongoing transfer window.
Aimable Nsabimana
Center back Nsabimana became a free agent after forcing a move out of Rayon Sports. He was made to leave the club after falling out with the club management which allegedly accused him of receiving bribe.
As he looks for a new team ahead of next season, Nsabimana has been doing individual training to keep himself in good shape.
Meddie Kagere
Veteran striker Kagere is also without a club since the end of the 2024/24 season when he parted ways with Tanzanian outfit Namungo FC after one year at the club.
Kagere, 38, joined Namungo FC from Singida Fountain in 2024, He also enjoyed a successful spell in Tanzania with Simba SC.
Last season, he scored three goals in the league as Namungo FC finished ninth in the 16-team league with 35 points.
Kagere is one of the most prolific players in the Tanzanian Premier League, He became the top scorer (23) for Simba SC in the 2018-19 season and repeated the feat in 2019-20 with 22 goals, a feat unique in the country for having done so for two consecutive years.
Djabel Manishimwe
Manishimwe recently left Naft Al-Wassat SC of the Iraqi Second Division league after his contract expired at the end of the season.
Recent reports linked the Rwandan midfielder to a return to APR FC but he dismissed the rumours, saying that he never spoke to any team since his contract expired.
“When a player does not have a team, it is possible anywhere, but I am in talks with many clubs and soon you will know. I have spoken to two foreign teams but no agreement has been reached yet,” he said.
Emery Bayisenge
Former Amavubi defender Bayisenge was released by Gasogi United at the end of the season and he is yet to get a ‘reasonable’ offer from interested clubs.
It is reported that AS Kigali and Rayon Sports are scouting the 30-year-old to secure his services ahead of the 2025/26.
Besides Gor Mahia, Bayisenge also played for APR FC and AS Kigali in Rwanda, KAC de Kenitra of Morocco and USM Alger in Algeria between 2016 and 2018.
He was the captain of the U17 which participated at U17 World Cup 2017 in Mexico.
Haruna Niyonzima
The veteran midfielder’s future at club football remains undecided, as reports continue to link him with retirement from professional football and turn to coaching.
But Niyonzima has always insisted his playing career is not over until he himself hangs his boots.
“When I started to play football, I didn’t ask for permission or advice and, if I am going to retire, I will take decision for my own. I will not seek advice from anyone,” said Niyonzima.
Despite insisting on playing club football, he remains out of contract since leaving AS Kigali at the end of the season.
