Africa-Press – Rwanda. The wage dispute between the management of upscale restaurant Choose Kigali and its former employees has been resolved after they paid all outstanding salaries, according to those involved.
The dispute, which gained public attention in July, involved more than a dozen former employees who accused the high-end restaurant and art space in the Kiyovu neighbourhood of failing to pay wages for months.
The case prompted mediation by the Rwanda Bar Association, the Ministry of Public Service and Labour, and the Nyarugenge District Labour Inspection.
“We sincerely thank everyone who supported us during the recent wage dispute,” read a post on X by Aline Umutesi, a former staff member, who brought the case to public attention in July. “We are pleased to confirm that the matter has been fully resolved.”
On August 7, both parties agreed to settle the matter by August 15. According to MIFOTRA, the resolution marks the full implementation of that agreement.
Daniel Byiringiro, the restaurant’s former head chef who had claims of up to Rwf15.6 million in unpaid wages, told The New Times he was relieved.
“I have no words to thank you because we are really, really happy,” he said.
Some of the former employees had claimed more than six months of unpaid work, as the restaurant kept postponing payment dates.
The New Times has learnt that all former staff who participated in the mediation process have been paid, with only one person remaining, who is expected to receive payment on Saturday.
