Africa-Press – Rwanda. Agaciro Development Fund (AgDF) on Friday, November 28, mobilised its leadership, staff, partners, and residents of Muhima Sector for a tree-planting exercise designed to promote environmental protection and contribute to a more climate-resilient future.

The activity, held on the slopes of Rugenge cell in Nyarugenge District, formed part of Agaciro’s broader commitment to building socio-economic resilience through sustainable and community-centred initiatives.

More than 200 trees were planted, and participants discussed the importance of protecting the environment.

More than 200 trees were planted, and participants took part in discussions on the importance of environmental conservation and individual responsibility in safeguarding natural ecosystems.

Created in December 2011 as Rwanda’s sovereign wealth fund and initiated by Rwandans, Agaciro has grown into a key investment vehicle with stakes in 28 companies across the country.

While this was the Fund’s first tree-planting event, it marks the beginning of a long-term environmental conservation agenda that will extend to all districts nationwide.

Speaking at the event, Agaciro Chief Executive Officer Ulrich Kayinamura said the initiative aligns with the Fund’s core mission of contributing to national development, stressing that environmental protection is directly linked to economic resilience.

“Investing in climate and environmental protection fits within our overall investment chain,” he said. “We have shares in different organisations, including those in agriculture, a sector heavily affected by climate change. As such, we feel compelled to contribute to protecting the environment through measures such as tree-planting.”

Local authorities in Muhima Sector welcomed the initiative as a valuable contribution to Rwanda’s environmental efforts.

He added that the Fund intends to work closely with companies in which it has invested to promote climate action and strengthen resilience to climate risks.

“We plan not only to engage our partners but also to support them in adopting preventive measures against environmental risks and disaster-management planning.” Kayinamura said.

He further noted that Agaciro’s environmental strategy extends beyond community activities to investment choices that promote a greener economy, including companies advancing clean technologies such as electric vehicles.

“We must conserve the environment, build a nature we are proud of, and protect our country from disasters that impact livelihoods and the national economy.” He added.

Local authorities in Muhima Sector welcomed the initiative as a good contribution to Rwanda’s environmental conservation efforts and commended the Fund’s commitment to continued collaboration.

Agaciro pledged to work with local leaders to maintain the planted trees through Umuganda and to engage in additional community development activities.
