Star point guard Elliott Cole scored a game high 25 points to inspire Patriots to a 97-85 victory over Azomco in the Rwanda Basketball League on Tuesday night at Petit Stade.
The former champions showed their intent from the onset, dominating the first quarter with 31-18 but Azomco quickly recovered to take the second quarter 24-16 as they reduced the gap to just five points at the break.
Back in the second half, Azomco were looking re-energised as their defense prevented Patriots from extending the lead and. Things went according to plan as they went on to tie the game at 66-66 after claiming the third quarter 24-19.
This put Sanny Niyomugabo and his men under pressure as Azomco players looked far more motivated going into the last quarter.
But, with the exploits of their star point guard Elliott, Patriots avoided the upset by winning the last quarter 31-19.
Elliott and Joel Kindred scored 25 and 21 points respectively for Patriots while Steven Hagumintwari dropped 15 points in 33 minutes.
Azomco’s Damaria Franklin led his team with 26 points in 34 minutes, whereas Jarode Aworet had only 13 points in 29 minutes.
APR top the table of the league with 31 points, six clear of second-placed Patriots. Tigers follow in third place with 21 points and REG complete the top four on 21 points after 12 games.
