Africa-Press – Rwanda. A fire that broke out at a garage in Gatsata Sector of Gasabo District on Wednesday, February 19, destroyed property worth an estimated Rwf153 million, The New Times has learnt.
The incident occurred in a neighborhood commonly known as Cyerekezo.
Emma Claudine Ntirenganya, the spokesperson of the City of Kigali, said the fire was triggered by a mechanic who was welding a car’s crumple zones using a charcoal stove.
The flames accidentally reached the vehicle’s fuel reserve, leading to the accident.
“The fire destroyed a lot of mechanical equipment and six cars, while 28 other vehicles were safely evacuated from the garage,” Ntirenganya told The New Times.
She said no life was lost in the incident.
The owner of the garage had said property worth over Rwf153 million had been destroyed, she said.
Ntirenganya added that the garage was insured under Old Mutual Insurance Rwanda.
