Right-Hand Drive Vehicles Allowed for Registration in Rwanda

Africa-Press – Rwanda. While all vehicles registered in Rwanda are required to have their steering wheel on the left-hand side, a new legislation has introduced certain exceptions.

Left-hand drive vehicles are standard in Rwanda, as the country follows a right-hand traffic system.

According to a road traffic bill which is before parliament for analysis, only a limited list of vehicles would be allowed to operate with the steering wheel on the right-hand side.

Article Five (proposed) of the bill outlines the regulations on vehicle steering wheel, providing that every automobile registered in Rwanda must have it on the left-hand side, except for the following cases:

Vehicles manufactured for persons with disabilities;

Lorries with a transport capacity of at least 20 tonnes;

Cross-border passenger transport buses;

Special vehicles used in agriculture, road construction, (general) construction, industry, loading and unloading, or any other vehicle specifically authorised by the minister in charge of transport;

Vehicles reserved for tourists visiting Rwanda, vehicles in transit, or those temporarily visiting Rwanda for any reason.

The bill specifies that a vehicle not registered in Rwanda but with a right-hand steering wheel may be driven on Rwandan roads for up to three months. However, this period may be extended upon written request and with approval from the ministry in charge of transport.
