Africa-Press – Rwanda. Rwandan mining company Trinity Metals is seeking to establish a new supply chain of tin from Rwanda to the United States.
This follows a letter of intent signed between Trinity Metals and Nathan Trotter, the largest manufacturer of tin and tin alloys in North America, at the US Department of State, on Tuesday, May 14.
“This type of critical minerals project supports U.S. onshoring, strengthens our national security, and advances economic prosperity,” the Department’s Bureau of Energy Resources, said in a post on X on Tuesday.
Trinity Metals runs three companies that are involved in mining and exploration of tin, tungsten and tantalum in Rwanda.
In April, President Paul Kagame held discussions with Shawn McCormick, Chairman of Trinity Metals, on the investment and partnership opportunities available in the country, especially in the mining sector.
Trinity manages Rutongo and Nyakabingo mines also in Rulindo and Musha mines in Rwamagana in Eastern Province.
The Nyakabingo mine in Rulindo District in Northern Province is the largest producer of tungsten in Africa. The mineral is used in manufacturing of metal wires, electrodes, and wear-resistant machine parts.
In 2024, Trinity Metals secured $3.865 million of technical assistance grant funding from the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation (DFC), America’s development finance institution.
The funding was earmarked for a comprehensive baseline study to support updated environmental and social impact assessments for all Trinity mines, a holistic employee skills development programme, the implementation of an international standard SHEC (Safety, Health, Environment and Community) Management System, integrated development planning for all mining concessions, and legacy tailings and river rehabilitation planning.
