Africa-Press – Rwanda. Sadness has enveloped the sports community in South Africa following the announcement of the death of national team midfielder and Mamelodi Sundowns player, Jayden Adams, at the age of 25. A family spokesperson confirmed the news of his passing, along with the South African Players Association, while official reports have yet to disclose details or the circumstances surrounding his sudden departure.

This tragedy comes just weeks after the player returned from participating in the 2026 World Cup, where he and his national team, Bafana Bafana, achieved an unprecedented historic milestone by reaching the knockout stages.

Adams had shown complete readiness and a positive spirit to return to local competitions; a sports site reported that Brenden Johnson, the player’s sports supervisor and mentor, stated: “This departure has torn everyone’s hearts apart. To return from the World Cup and then receive such news is devastating. I had a close conversation with him last Thursday, and he was very positive and fully prepared to return and face the upcoming challenges.”

On the family front, the death came less than a day after Adams reposted a picture with his partner online, which she had shared on Friday.

His passing follows weeks of hardship for the player during the World Cup, as he was devastated by the death of his grandmother, Mariana, aged 72, in a Stellenbosch hospital, just one day before his team’s second group match. The president of the South African Football Association, Danny Jordaan, had offered his condolences to the player at that time, praising his courage and dedication on the field despite the weight of his sorrow.

His International and World Cup Career

Adams emerged as a key player for South Africa in the 2026 World Cup, participating in all three group stage matches in Group A. He started in the first round, where his team lost 2-0 to Mexico at the Azteca Stadium, playing for an hour. He also started in the second round against the Czech Republic at the Atlanta Stadium on Thursday, June 18, 2026, despite his grandmother’s passing the day before, and was substituted at halftime in the match that ended in a 1-1 draw, earning the team their first point.

In the crucial round against South Korea, Adams came on as a substitute late in the match, contributing to the historic 1-0 victory, which qualified South Africa for the Round of 32 for the first time in its history, before the team exited the tournament after losing to Canada.

The player’s international records indicate varied milestones; he made his international debut in 2022 (according to local sources against Mozambique, while other sources indicate that his first appearance was in 2024), and he was not included in the squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. His international tally ranges between 9 and 13 caps, during which he scored two goals in the qualifying rounds for the current World Cup.

Domestic Career and Reactions

At the club level, Adams progressed through the youth ranks at Stellenbosch FC (his childhood club) before moving to Mamelodi Sundowns, based in Pretoria, in a deal executed between January 2025 and last summer, where he helped the team secure the CAF Champions League title for the 2025/2026 season.

In administrative reactions, the South African Players Association issued a statement expressing its profound shock, stating: “The association is in a state of disbelief following the sudden death of Jayden Adams. He recently represented South Africa at the World Cup, carrying the hopes of the nation with pride, courage, and distinction. His passing represents an irreplaceable loss to his family, teammates, clubs, and the football community and the country at large. The game has lost a talented player, a proud servant, and a young future that still had much to offer.”
