Africa-Press – Rwanda. The University of Global Health Equity (UGHE) and the University of Rwanda (UR) are among the top 10 universities in Sub-Saharan Africa, according to the 2024 Times Higher Education rankings.

This year’s report assessed 129 universities across 22 countries, using a methodology specifically designed to evaluate their impact in addressing the region’s pressing challenges. The evaluation framework is built around 20 metrics grouped into five pillars: resources and finance, access and fairness, student engagement, ethical leadership, and Africa impact.

Rwanda’s UGHE climbed from 8th place last year to fourth in the latest rankings, achieving the highest score in the region in the student engagement pillar.

University of Rwanda secured sixth position, further cementing the country’s growing reputation for academic excellence.

At the top of the rankings is South Africa’s University of Johannesburg, which performed well in the access and fairness, and resources and finance pillars. South African universities dominate the list, claiming four of the top 10 spots, including the first three positions.

Overall, the top 10 universities in Sub-Saharan Africa are represented by four from Southern Africa, two from Rwanda, two from Ghana, one from Somalia, and one from Uganda.
