Africa-Press – Rwanda. As part of its corporate social responsibilities, Cogebanque Plc has handed over health insurance premiums to 500 residents in Nyarugenge District, through the community-based health insurance scheme known as Mutuelle de Sante.

According to Cogebanque management, the donation to Nyarugenge District, where the bank’s Headquarters is located, was made with an aim to contribute to inclusive access to healthcare services and foster a culture of prevention by easing the financial burden of medical costs for many, particularly the poor and vulnerable households.

The donation was formally received Thursday, November 24, by Nyarugenge District authorities and will benefit vulnerable people who would not afford to pay health insurance.

“We can’t serve an unhealthy community which is why we highly strive to connect the most vulnerable to the health care they need and deserve,” said Antoine Iyamuremye, the head of marketing and product development at Cogebanque.

“This contribution aligns closely with our values as a bank; we are accountable for alleviating national issues affecting our society and amongst the other is inequity.”

He added that giving back to the community is part of the bank’s culture and mandate; and that they are always involved in activities that lead to the country’s development hence this donation.

“This will enable the 500 people to exercise their right to health while experiencing equity in healthcare coverage.

The health of our stakeholders and the community at large is key, if they are to continue being active contributors to Rwanda’s economy.”

Currently, Nyarugenge District has reached 88 per cent of Mutuelle de Santé contributions. Officials said stakeholders like the private sector can play a big role in helping vulnerable households afford medical services.

“We are very thankful to Cogebanque for their donation of health insurance premiums to the citizens, who will now be able to access healthcare services,” Betty Murebwayire, the division manager of corporate services at Nyarugenge District.

“The role of the private sector in ensuring the wellbeing of the citizens, particularly through contributing to Mutuelle de Sante, is very much appreciated.”

To reach the target of 100 per cent contributions to Mutuelle de Sante by the end of the year, Murebwayire added that district officials will continue to mobilize resources and sensitize the district residents to the benefits of using health insurance.

This support will enable the 500 people to exercise their right to health while experiencing equity in healthcare coverage.
