Africa-Press – Rwanda. The construction of Kigali Centralised Sewerage System is scheduled to commence in June 2025, according to the City of Kigali.
On Wednesday, May 14, officials from the City of Kigali and the Water and Sanitation Corporation (WASAC) Group met with representatives of various institutions and stakeholders involved in the Kigali Centralised Sewerage System project in Nyarugenge District.

The system will have a 92-kilometre network that will channel wastewater from the sectors of Kigali, Nyarugenge, Muhima, and Gitega to a treatment plant in the Giticyinyoni area.
In its initial phase, the network will be capable of transporting wastewater from approximately 208,000 households.

The wastewater treatment plant at Giticyinyoni is expected to have the capacity for 12,000 cubic metres of liquid waste every day.
The treated water will be released into nature while the sludge-like remainder will be used for organic fertilisers and energy generation.
“Expropriation has been completed. A large portion of the system did not require expropriation,” explained Emma Claudine Ntirenganya, the City’s spokesperson.
Robert Bimenyimana, the WASAC Group Spokesperson, confirmed that funding for the project has been secured.
The first phase of the project will cost more than €96 million (approx. Rwf154 billion) and is expected to serve the city’s Central Business District (CBD).
Bimenyimana said that Wednesday’s meeting was aimed at providing stakeholders with updates to ensure readiness for the project implementation.
“Stakeholders need to be prepared, because once the project execution begins, residents of the areas where the wastewater transport networks will pass may have to be relocated,” he explained.
He also noted that some roads may be temporarily closed during the construction period.

“Certain roads may be permanently closed and relocated. Therefore, all people with properties that might be affected by the construction of the centralised sewerage system and its supporting infrastructure should be made aware before the works commence,” he added.
The construction of the sewerage system was meant to begin in June 2019 but has been delayed for years due to the lack of a contractor, among other challenges.
Two more sewage systems expected
Kigali City will have three main centralised sewage systems after dividing the capital into three catchments, Nyarugenge, Gasabo and Kicukiro.
A study has also been completed for Gasabo central sewage system, while the study for Kicukiro District was underway.
The Gasabo sewage system will treat wastewater from Gacuriro, Kagugu, Nyarutarama, Kibagabaga, Kinyinya, Remera, parts of Kimironko, Kimihurura, Kacyiru and other areas that release waste water in the Karuruma area, where the treatment plant will be constructed.
The Kicukiro sewage system will treat wastewater from parts of Remera, Kimironko, the industrial park, Masaka, Gikondo and other areas that channel wastewater towards Kanombe and Masaka wetland areas.
