Africa-Press – Rwanda. The City of Kigali has embarked on a plan to develop a masterplan for the envisaged medical hub to be set up in Masaka area of Kicukiro District.

Once completed, the hub, some of whose facilities are already under development will not only serve the country but the region as well.

Officials said the proposed Kigali Health City will be built on 500 hectares in Kicukiro District, according to media reports.

The development is part of the efforts to strengthen healthcare systems in Rwanda by prioritising accessible, affordable, quality, and efficient delivery of healthcare services to advance universal health coverage.

Antoine Mutsinzi, Kicukiro District Executive Administrator, said office halted giving building licenses to people as they wait for the final masterplan that will determine land specificity and the exact number of people to be relocated.

He also encouraged investors to explore opportunities of investing in infrastructure development in the area that will play part in harnessing service delivery and experience in the medical hub.

Besides different institutions currently under construction, or planned to be built in the area, the city will also feature hotels, supermarkets, recreation, and conference centres, for an enabling environment.

The hub will host IRCAD Africa, a surgical research and training centre, the new University Teaching Hospital of Kigali (CHUK), My Heart Care Centre, RBC and Rwanda FDA laboratories, the headquarters of University of Global Health Equity, as well as a Centre of Excellence for Infectious Diseases and Isolation.

These are among many other international and local health-related projects expected to be hosted in Kigali Health City.
