Africa-Press – Rwanda. New Prime Minister Justin Nsengiyumva is set to visit Gabiro Agribusiness Hub in Nyagatare District, Eastern Province, on Saturday, August 9. The hub is a flagship agricultural project aimed at strengthening food security, reducing trade imbalances, and generating employment.

The visit marks the second day of the Prime Minister’s tour of agricultural initiatives across Eastern Province, which began on August 8.

The agribusiness hub was established through a partnership between the Government of Rwanda and Netafim, an Israel-based global leader in irrigation technologies. It aims to boost food security, reduce trade imbalances, and create jobs through advanced water infrastructure, cutting-edge irrigation, and agro-processing.

Investments in the project are expected to enhance productivity and introduce modern farming practices, with over 6,000 jobs to be generated, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Resources.

As of 2024, over Rwf100 billion had been invested in the development of the initial 5,600 hectares, marking the project’s first phase.

On the first day of his tour, Prime Minister Nsengiyumva visited other key agricultural initiatives, including Inyange Milk Powder Plant. Built at a cost of $54 million, the facility has the capacity to process 650,000 litres of milk daily – 500,000 litres into powdered milk and 150,000 litres into UHT liquid milk.

He also toured the Nasho Solar-Powered Irrigation Project, which covers over 1,100 hectares and supports more than 2,000 farmers. The project is designed to enhance food security and improve rural livelihoods by increasing resilience to climate-related challenges.
