Africa-Press – Rwanda. Two people were killed and seven others injured in a collision of multiple vehicles, including a passenger bus and a pickup truck, in Kanyinya Sector of Nyarugenge District on Friday, April 18, police said.
The primary cause of the incident was a reckless overtaking maneuver by the driver of a Hilux Vigo truck that disrupted the flow of traffic and triggered a multi-vehicle collision, according to Traffic Police spokesperson, SP Emmanuel Kayigi.
The incident unfolded at around 10:40 a.m. and involved several vehicles, including a RICTO bus headed towards Kigali from Musanze that overturned.
Speaking to The New Times on Friday afternoon, Kayigi explained that the sequence of events began when the pickup driver made contact with a Toyota Avensis. This initial impact caused the Vigo to veer out of control and collide with the passenger bus traveling from Musanze to Kigali, causing the bus to overturn.
“The two people, the occupants of the Vigo truck, died instantly and their bodies were taken to RFI Kacyiru Hospital. The seven other injured victims were transported to CHUK hospital and Kanyinya Health Center for medical attention,” Kayigi said in a written response.
“We remind the public to avoid reckless driving and other comparable errors, as these are major causes of accidents, often with fatal consequences,” added Kayigi.
