Shyorongi Community Receives Bus Station Funding

Africa-Press – Rwanda. Trinity Metals, on August 29, inaugurated the Shyorongi Bus Station in Rulindo District, a project aimed at addressing transport challenges in the area.

The company, a leader in responsible mining in Rwanda, says the investment reflects its commitment to sustainable development and improving the well-being of communities where it operates.

As part of the company’s ongoing Community Development Plan (CDP), under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives, Trinity Nyakabingo Mine—a subsidiary of Trinity Metals—constructed the Shyorongi Bus Station to make public transport more accessible, safe, and convenient for the community and travellers, as it is the only bus park between Kigali and Musanze.

The handover ceremony brought together residents, transport operators, local leaders, and business partners.

The handover ceremony of the bus station to the district administration brought together residents, transport operators, local leaders, and business partners from Shyorongi Sector and nearby areas to celebrate the achievement.

Speaking at the event, Justin Uwiringiyimana, General Manager of Trinity Nyakabingo Mine, stated the project, along with surrounding infrastructure, has cost approximately Rwf 500 million.

“This is more than just a bus station. It is a symbol of Trinity Nyakabingo Mines and Trinity Metals’ commitment to supporting local development and building a better future, anchored in seven pillars,” he noted.

The company’s seven pillars include: community development; improving local infrastructure; job creation and employment for local communities; public health promotion; building resilience through disaster risk reduction initiatives; education, skills, and livelihood development; and strengthening the capacity of local community security.

Peter Geleta, CEO of Trinity Metals, said that construction of the project began in 2024, with the goal of improving road safety by reducing congestion caused by commercial activities and traffic, while positively impacting the local community and businesses.

“People were boarding buses by the roadside, which was unsafe. This project has provided a safer, more organised space,” he said.

Peter Geleta, CEO of Trinity Metals, and Judith Mukanyirigira, Mayor of Rulindo District, during the ribbon cutting event in Rulindo District on August 29.

He added that the bus station stands as a testament to what can be achieved through partnership and collaboration.

“The mine and the community cannot be separated. Ninety-eight per cent of our workers come from the local community. When the mine does well, the community does well. When the community thrives, the workforce is happy and productive. That is why we must always work together— a happy workforce, a happy community, and everyone working towards a common goal,” he said.

Judith Mukanyirigira, Mayor of Rulindo District, commended Trinity Metals for investing in the mining sector in Rulindo and supporting the establishment of the Shyorongi Bus Station.

“This project has raised the standard of development in Shyorongi town. A place that was once underdeveloped is now transformed, with modern infrastructure that will not only improve our image but also strengthen security for the people of Shyorongi and beyond.

This bus station will make travel much easier—whether from Shyorongi to Kigali or from Kigali back to Shyorongi. Transport will be more reliable, more convenient, and available when needed,” she said.

She also noted that business in Shyorongi is expected to grow, as farmers will find it easier to bring their goods to Kigali for trade.

“The new bus station is already attracting new residents who are choosing to settle in Shyorongi,” she added.

Emma-Claudine Ntirenganya, spokesperson for the City of Kigali, said a new public transport line connecting Nyabugogo Bus Park and Shyorongi Bus Station is currently being planned.

“The Nyabugogo–Shyorongi line will be officially inaugurated by October. This will link Kigali with Rulindo, in addition to other lines connecting Kigali with neighbouring districts,” she said.

Yvonne Umutesi, a resident of Shyorongi sector, said the new bus station will greatly benefit women involved in business.

“As women who work in Nyakabingo Mine, we formed a savings association and opened shops around the bus station to start businesses. We thank Trinity Metals and Rulindo District for constructing the bus park, which will help us attract customers. It will also enable Rulindo residents to connect to other routes across the country, including Kigali City,” she said.
