Africa-Press – Rwanda. AOS, a Rwanda-based ICT service provider, gathered its staff at the Mwulire Genocide Memorial in Rwamagana District on Friday, May 9, to pay tribute to the victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

During the event, the company donated 10 cows to families of Genocide survivors in Mwulire and financially contributed to support ongoing memorial activities. AOS staff also laid wreaths at the memorial site to honour the victims.

Kevin BC Koo, CEO of AOS, emphasised that they stand in solidarity with survivors and are committed to ensuring such atrocities never happen again.

“Remembering our lost loved ones is a responsibility for everyone. But it’s also a moment to reflect on our history, reaffirm our commitment, and ensure that what happened will never be repeated.

“To remember is not only to learn from the past but also to reflect on where we are today and how we can shape a better tomorrow. Thirty-one years may seem like a long time, and yes, it is, but the memories never fade. Survivors will never forget, and neither should we,” he added.

Koo also noted the persistence of genocide denial and the need to educate the younger generation. He urged young people to take an active role in promoting unity and reconciliation, and to stand against genocide ideology.

Theoneste Muzungu, head of Ibuka in Mwulire Sector, spoke about the area’s history during the Genocide, explaining that many Tutsi had fled to Mwulire seeking refuge. Some of them, he said, managed to defend themselves and drive away the Interahamwe militia who had come to kill them.

He also noted that Mwulire is in the process of building a new memorial site. “We are constructing the Mwulire Memorial with the aim of teaching young people about our history and the importance of standing up and defending themselves and their values,” he said.

He added, “We thank RPF-Inkotanyi, whom we call ‘life,’ for putting their lives on the line to come and rescue us.”

Muzungu thanked AOS for the initiative, emphasising that their presence showed respect for the lives lost and provided emotional and practical support to survivors. He specifically praised the donation of cows as meaningful assistance.

Emeliana Bagwaneza, a Genocide survivor from Mwulire Sector, thanked AOS for the cow she received. “This cow will help me a lot, especially in providing manure for my farm. I will also have milk to drink and improve my life. I am happy to receive this gift; my life is about to change.”

Another survivor, Jean Bosco Munyakazi, also from Mwulire, extended his appreciation, noting the benefits the cows would bring. “They will greatly help, especially in providing milk for the healthy growth of my young children. The cows will also produce more, enabling us to improve even further. We will have more milk to share with our neighbours, and together, we will all be happier.”

Richards Kagabo Rwamunono, the Vice Mayor of Rwamagana District in charge of economic development, said that although Rwanda has a bad history, it is necessary to learn from it as the country continues to look forward.

“We commend Rwanda for ensuring that no child is left behind in education. No one is judged by their appearance. Rwanda is a nation that rejects any criteria designed to marginalise individuals or deny them opportunities,” he said.

AOS is a joint venture between the Government of Rwanda and Korea Telecom (KT), established to accelerate digital transformation across the region.
