Africa-Press – Rwanda. First Lady Jeannette Kagame on Friday, September 5, joined thousands of people who gathered in Kinigi, Musanze District, for the 20th gorilla naming ceremony Kwita Izina.

Prime Minister Justin Nsengiyumva also graced the star-studded ceremony in which 40 baby gorillas will be given names.

Held at the foothills of the Volcanoes National Park since 2005, Kwita Izina reflects conservation efforts that have seen the once-endangered mountain gorillas flourish, alongside socioeconomic development of the communities.

The gorilla population in the Virunga Massif, shared by Rwanda, DR Congo and Uganda, has grown from 880 in 2008 to 1063 today.
