Africa-Press – Rwanda. The Senior Defence and Security Advisor to President Paul Kagame, General James Kabarebe, on Friday, June 23, visited Rwandan Security Forces (RSF) operating in Cabo Delgado Province, Mozambique.

According to a statement by the Ministry of Defence, Kabarebe was received by the RSF Joint Task Force Commander Maj Gen Eugene Nkubito, who briefed him on the progress registered in their counter-terrorism operations in Cabo Delgado.

During interactions with the RSF in Mocimboa da Praia District, Kabarebe “conveyed a message from H.E President Paul Kagame appreciating their commitment in fulfilling their duties and encouraged them to remain steadfast and dedicated in achieving good results,” the statement reads.

Rwanda deployed troops to Cabo Delgado in July 2021 at the request of the government of Mozambique to support efforts to restore Mozambican state authority by conducting combat and security operations against armed extremists linked to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).

But barely two weeks after landing, Rwandan and Mozambican forces were circling major bases of the terrorists, capturing them, one after a time. On August 8, 2021, they captured Mocimboa da Praia, a port city that had been the headquarters of the Islamic State-linked terrorist group in Cabo Delgado for nearly five years.
