Rwanda: African voice of Directors expands board professionalisation efforts through training

Africa-Press – Rwanda. The African voice of Directors Ltd (AvD), in partnership with the UK-based Institute of Directors (IoD), concluded an intensive six-day training session on the professionalisation of boards in Rwanda.

Held from December 1 to 6, this marked the second instalment of the Chartered Director Programme, an initiative aimed at enhancing the skills of the country’s corporate governance.

In the first phase of the Chartered Director Programme, participants focused on the IoD Certificate in Company Direction, which serves as the programme’s foundation.

This qualification, recognised at the bachelor’s level under the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF), provides directors with the knowledge essential for an effective board.

It provides a strong basis for those aiming to expand their expertise and adopt global best practices in governance and leadership.

The concluded session marked the second promotion of delegates. This intensive, six-day residential training targeted 20 participants, primarily from the private sector.

The training emphasised practical learning, enhanced through real-life scenarios and peer collaboration, enabling participants to apply their knowledge and skills immediately at the board level for maximum impact.

This fast-track approach not only caters to time-constrained directors seeking to upskill quickly but also provides an effective solution for board members aiming to adopt a unified approach to governance, strategy, and leadership.

AvD, a Rwanda-based organisation focused on promoting and training board directors, plans to offer this programme regularly.

According to Jean-Paul Kajangwe, Managing Director of AvD, the initiative will be conducted four times a year to meet the growing demand for professionalised board leadership in Rwanda

“We already have another session planned for March,” Kajangwe said.

“This programme was intensive and tailored for high-level private-sector leaders. Participants appreciated its relevance and committed to encouraging other board members to join future sessions. Our vision is to ensure that directors across various sectors are well-trained and equipped to lead effectively.”

Kajangwe noted that Kigali International Financial Centre (KIFC) supported the initiative as a local promoter, reinforcing its commitment to advancing Rwanda’s business ecosystem.

He said, “KIFC’s involvement underscores the importance of fostering professionalism within boards to drive sustainable growth.”
