Africa-Press – Rwanda. The Minister of Defence, Juvenal Marizamunda, has urged newly graduated Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) officers to lead with integrity, serve selflessly, and protect the vulnerable as they begin their military careers.
He made the remarks on August 4, during the graduation ceremony of 81 officers from the Rwanda Military Academy (RMA) in Gako, Bugesera District. The ceremony marked the completion of a four-year academic program conducted in partnership with the University of Rwanda.
Sixty-one officers earned bachelor’s degrees in Social and Military Sciences, while 20 earned degrees in General Medicine.
Among the distinguished guests in attendance were the Minister of Education, Joseph Nsengimana, RDF Chief of Defence Staff, Gen Mubarakh Muganga, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Rwanda, Prof. Didas Kayihura Muganga, senior officials from security institutions, and families of the graduates.
“In this era of rapid technological transformation and global challenges, education is not merely a tool, it is a strategic imperative,” Marizamunda said.
He added that Rwanda’s defence policy aims to equip the servicemen and women with the knowledge and skills needed to safeguard both national and regional security.
He also commended the University of Rwanda faculty for their dedication to nurturing future military leaders.
“As you leave the halls of Rwanda Military Academy in Gako,” Marizamunda told the graduands, “you carry more than academic credentials. You bear the trust and hope of an entire nation.”

Defence minister noted the evolving nature of warfare, citing cybersecurity, climate-related risks, and regional conflicts as emerging threats. However, he expressed confidence that the graduates are well-prepared to face these challenges with clarity, conviction, and courage.
“True leadership in the Rwanda Defence Force is measured not by effort alone, but by service to others. Lead by example, treat those under your command with respect and dignity, and never forget that the greatest honour in military service comes from protecting those who cannot protect themselves,” he added.
UR Vice Chancellor Prof. Muganga, emphasised that the training has prepared graduates to handle both routine clinical work and the high-stakes demands of military medicine. He added that those in social and military sciences were equipped to address complex social dynamics, strengthen military institutions, improve civil-military relations, and promote lasting peace and stability.
“As you get back to your respective roles in service for our nation, remember that we carry with you the hope and high expectations of our people. Exhibit the highest level of professionalism, compassion, and leadership,” Muganga said.
“Whether by treating patients at different health facilities, conducting research and advances in medicine or by enhancing good relations between military and civilian communities, let your work reflect the highest degree of professionalism.”
Francoise Mutamuriza, a parent of one of the graduates, said she was proud of the achievement.
“I wish them success in their work, and we hope they will put into action what they were taught, to serve the country and the people of Rwanda with dedication,” she said.
