Africa-Press – Rwanda. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) Executive Board has announced that the number of participating teams in 3×3 basketball will increase to 12 men’s and 12 women’s teams at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

This increase from eight to twelve teams per gender reflects the rise of 3×3 basketball and reinforces its growing global appeal. The expanded format allows for greater national representation and provides more countries with the opportunity to compete on the Olympic stage.

“We thank the IOC for its decision, which provides great encouragement for FIBA and its members to continue promoting our urban discipline,” said FIBA President Sheikh Saud Ali Al Thani.

“Having four additional teams in each tournament is a testament to the global interest and excitement that Olympic Basketball has generated, from Tokyo 2020 to Paris 2024,” he added.

FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis also welcomed the news, calling it a major milestone for the sport.

“The additional quota allows more National Federations and players from around the world to believe that they can go from the streets to the Olympics,” he said.

“Los Angeles is one of basketball’s most iconic cities and has a strong 3×3 culture. We are excited to once again be at the center of an urban, high-energy Olympic atmosphere.”

The official competition format and qualification system for the 3×3 tournaments at LA 2028 will be shared at a later date.
