Africa-Press – Rwanda. Rwanda national football team head coach, Carlos Alos Ferrer, is optimistic that Amavubi will register a positive result at home against Mozambique’s Os Mambas in the second leg of the qualifiers for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations scheduled for June 18, at Huye Stadium.
Ferrer said that his optimism hinged on the good start in the previous game against Mozambique.
Amavubi need to beat Mozambique and hope Benin loses against Senegal to boost Rwanda’s chances of qualifying for the prized continental tournament.
“We had a good run when we had a good chance after three draws but things changed when we were forfeited. But we still have a chance. We will do everything we can to win that game. Players have to work extremely hard in the two weeks that we have to prepare for the game,” Ferrer told reporters.
Amavubi put up a spirited showing in June 2022 when they held Os Mambas to a 1-1 draw in Johannesburg.
Ferrer admitted that it will be a very difficult game in the return leg because they will take on a very good side with a good coach who has been around for so long.
Sandviken midfielder Yannick Mukunzi is included in Amavubi’s 28-man provisional squad.
“We are a good side and I also have a good experience. We are going to try and get a better result. I think we have good players who can work hard and get a win at home. I believe in our players and they have to believe in themselves and give everything they have to win.”
Rwanda are bottom of Group L with 2 points, two behind Mozambique and Benin who, respectively, are second and third in the table led by African champions Senegal, who already booked their ticket to the 2023 AFCON finals in Cote d’Ivoire come January 2024.
“I expect to get a result against Mozambique and finish the business against Senegal and hopefully we will qualify for the finals,” added the Spaniard.
To qualify for the 2023 AFCON, Rwanda needs to win all its two remaining games against Mozambique and Senegal, hoping that Benin drops at least two points against Mozambique and Senegal.
