Africa-Press – Rwanda. Agahozo Shalom claimed two gold medals at the 2025 Genocide Memorial Karate tournament which took place at NPC gymnasium on Sunday, June 1.

The annual karate tournament is organised by Rwanda Karate Federation (FERWAKA) in collaboration with the National Olympic Committee as part of commemorating the victims of the Genocide perpetrated against the Tutsi in 1994 through sports and Karate in particular.

Prior to the competition, members of Rwandan karate fraternity gathered at Kigali Genocide Memorial site to pay tribute to more than 250,000 victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi laid to rest at the site.

During the event, FERWAKA president Damien Niyongabo said, “As Karatekas, let us strive to promote positivity in our society so that the dark history that once defined our country will never repeat itself.”

The commemoration activity was followed by the tournament which attracted 21 teams. They include four teams in women’s category namely Agahozo Shalom, APR karate club, Flying Eagles and Zanshin Sports Academy.

The men’s karate competition also attracted four teams including APR Karate club, The Great Warriors, Zanshin Sports Academy and Hero Karte Do Club.

Agahozo Shalom won gold medals in both girls’ team Kumite and Kata while APR Karate Club took the gold medal in the men’s team Kata. The Great Warriors claimed the championship title in the men’s team Kumite.

Before the tournament concluded, FERWAKA extended a hand of support to one of the genocide survivors, François Umufasha, in a charitable gesture.
