AS Kigali are title contenders, says captain Kwizera

Africa-Press – Rwanda. AS Kigali captain Pierrot Kwizera says the club are “genuine contenders” for the Rwanda Premier League title after walloping SC Kiyovu 4-0 at Kigali Stadium on Tuesday, November 2.

“We’ve shown that we are genuine contenders and we are going to fight to the end for this,” said the midfielder before adding that “They are a fantastic team and this is one of the most difficult teams to play. AS Kigali has not won the league title since it was founded in 1999 but has won five cup competitions.

“We believe that we can win the league. Our dominance in the match was clear. We had confidence and belief coming into the game that we could get a result. We would have scored five or six and that is testament to the quality of the players,” the Burundian midfielder added.

The win took AS Kigali to the top of the table with six points while Gasogi United are second with four points. In other matches on Tuesday, Gorilla FC played a 1-1 draw against Marines FC while Mukura Victory Sports was held to a 1-1 by Gasogi United at Huye Stadium.

AS Kigali won the Peace Cup in 2001 as Les Citadins FC before changing its name in 2005 and went to win the tourney again in 2013 and 2019. After match day two of the league, all teams will take a two-week break as there will be international matches where Rwanda will face Mali and Kenya in search of 2022 World Cup qualifiers.
