Star shooting guard Cleveland Thomas ran the show at Lycee de Kigali on Saturday, February 1, as his 17 points, 9 rebounds and four assists inspired Rwanda Energy Group (REG) to a convincing 92-58 victory over Espoir.
Jean de Dieu Umuhoza and Oliver Shyaka added 13 and 12 points, respectively, to cement the win for the former champions.
REG, currently coached by Ogoh Odaudu, won the first two quarters, 20-14 and 21-15 respectively to take control of the game early with 41-29 at the break.
Cleveland got his side up and firing, as they dominated the second half, winning the third quarter 31-19 and the last quarter 20-10.
REG are enjoying a perfect start to the new season, but they aren’t done yet on the market as they look to challenge for the championship.
The club has now acquired South African center Pieter Prinsloo who agreed to play for the club during the 2025 season.
Born in Pretoria, Prinsloo is in his 11th year of his professional basketball career.
The centre, who last played for Chilean side Club Deportes Las Animas, grew up and schooled in the United States. Since graduating from Marist College in 2014, he has played and earned a good living in overseas markets.
Earlier in the day, Orion beat Kepler 87-81 in the first game at LDK Gymnasium.
The league continues on Sunday, February 2, when Tigers take on APR in a mouthwatering matchup which will take place at LDK Gymnasium.
