Basketball: Nijimbere joins Kepler

Africa-Press – Rwanda. Topflight side Kepler Basketball Club has bolstered its roster with the addition of Burundian star point guard Guibert Nijimbere.

Regarded as one of the top guards in the region, Nijimbere is no stranger to Rwandan basketball, having previously played for IPRC-Kigali and Patriots.

The 27-year-old brings a wealth of experience to Kepler, having competed at both domestic and continental levels. He represented Burundian club Urunani in the qualifiers of the Basketball Africa League (BAL) in 2021 and also featured for Rwandan side Patriots in the same competition back in 2019.

Most recently, Nijimbere played a pivotal role in Dynamo Basketball Club’s journey to the final tournament of the BAL qualifiers before they were disqualified from the event over abstaining from play without the Visit Rwanda sponsor display on their jerseys.

Nijimbere’s basketball journey began in his homeland of Burundi, where he honed his skills from a young age. At just 16 years old, he joined New Stars’ youth team in Burundi’s second-tier league, earning promotion to the topflight the following season. His inclusion made him the youngest player ever to grace the country’s premier championship.

After representing New Stars for four seasons, Nijimbere relocated to Rwanda to pursue university studies. Alongside his club commitments, he has also been a regular feature in the Burundian national team, notably participating in the 2017 regional Zone V tournament held in Uganda.

As of now, Kepler BBC occupies the sixth position on the league table out of the ten participating teams in the topflight. The club hopes the Burundian qualify them into the playoffs after the second round which commences in May.
