Africa-Press – Rwanda. Rwanda Energy Group (REG) women’s basketball team head coach Esperance Mukaneza has said that her team’s eyes are only set on winning the Africa Zone V Club Championship which is due in Kigali from October 28 to November 4.

REG will, alongside league champions APR, be representing Rwanda at the basketball tournament which will attract 10 teams from six countries in the region.

Uganda, Burundi, Tanzania, Kenya, South Sudan will also be represented in the competition.

“Last year we finished in fourth place but we now have the goal of winning this tournament,” Mukaneza told Times Sport on Tuesday, October 10.

The 2023 women basketball league runners-up are currently training at Lycée de Kigali Gymnasium as they gear up for the tournament.

“The players are fine,” she said, adding that the club plans to add two international players before the competition begins.

“Teams are allowed to use four international players and I only have two for now.”

The Africa Zone 5 Club Championship was initially scheduled to take place from October 21-28, before FIBA Africa rescheduled it from October 28 through November 4.

The tournament acts as a qualifier for the 2023 FIBA Africa Champions Cup for Women which will take place in Egypt, from December 8 to 17, bringing together 10 women’s basketball clubs from all over the continent.

Tanzania: Vijana Queens and JKT Stars

Rwanda: APR and REG

South Sudan: Nile Legends

Uganda: JKL Lady Dolphins and UCU Lady Canons

Burundi: Gladiators

Kenya: Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) and Equity Bank basketball club.
