Africa-Press – Rwanda. Canadian rider Magdeleine Vallieres was proclaimed world champion in women category after a masterful final sprint against a group of three riders to take the crown in Kigali on Saturday, September 27.
Vallieres showed cold blood and power in the last kilometers, winning a historic gold medal for Canada.
The 24-year-old took her time to observe the race and wait to attack at the final touch. It took her 4 hours, 34 minutes, and 48 seconds to finish off the 164.6-kilometer distance.
New Zealand’s Niamh Fisher-Black finished second, with 23 seconds behind, while Spain’s Mavi García was third, coming 27 seconds behind.
It was a day to forget for Rwandan representatives who all withdrew from the race. Xaverine Nirere held onto the wheels when her counterparts Valentine Nzayisenga and Violette Irakoze Nezahad withdrawn so early but her resistance faded away as she withdrew after 10 laps.
This was Nirere’s third time competing at the UCI World Championships after 2023 and 2024. It her second time failing to finish the road race.
It was also Ingabire’s fourth appearance in the championships. She hasn’t finished any.
