Clubs Can Field Eight Foreign Players in League Matches

Africa-Press – Rwanda. The Rwanda Football Association (FERWAFA) has allowed top tier clubs to field as many as eight players on the pitch starting from the 2025/26 season.

Previously, clubs would put 10 foreigners on the match sheet, but the governing body’s foreign players quota rule would allow only six players on the field.

APR FC lost to Gorilla FC 3-0 through a forfeit after fielding seven foreign players on the pitch.

Now, according to the federation, the number on foreign players on the match sheet should not exceed eight and clubs will be allowed to field them all.

But again, FERWAFA also said that there will be a fee for registering foreign players where, starting from the next transfer window (in January), registering a foreign player will be done at a fee of Rwf 2,000,000.

Normally, registering players and assistant coaches was Rwf 5,000 each, Rwf 100,000 for a Rwandan head coach, and Rwf 500,000 for a foreign coach.

Another key decision taken by the executive committee is that, starting from the 2026/27 season, each team will be required to have at least three Rwandan players aged under 21 on their squads.

This, according to the statement, aims to create development a platform for your players to play at the highest level.

The 2025/26 league season will kick off on Friday, September 12.
