In recent years, global football has witnessed an unprecedented surge in development, with the Federation of International Football Association (FIFA) playing a pivotal role in catalyzing this transformation. This is according to a report released recently by the game’s world governing body.
The substantial financial infusion, amounting to approximately $2.8 billion between 2016 and 2023, underscores FIFA’s commitment to elevating the sport worldwide. Rwanda hasn’t been left behind–actually, the country has been among the biggest beneficiaries going by the figures as reported by The New Times.
Rwanda, a significant beneficiary of FIFA’s developmental initiatives, particularly in the CECAFA zone, now faces the crucial task of optimizing these funds to propel its football standards to new heights and become a consistent participant in major competitions.
A substantial portion of FIFA’s investment in Rwanda is directed towards infrastructure, with a notable example being the $4.7 million [Rwf5.8 billion], 42-room hotel inaugurated in March. While such developments are commendable, the Rwanda Football Federation (FERWAFA) must ensure that these facilities are efficiently utilized.
The accommodation facility, for instance, should not only serve as a temporary lodging for national teams but also as a centre for football development activities, including training camps and coaching clinics. This multi-functional approach will maximize the facility’s impact and contribute to the growth of football in the country.
An annual allocation of $2.5 million [Rwf3.1 billion] from FIFA specifically for infrastructure development presents a golden opportunity for FERWAFA to address critical gaps.
With the magnificent Amahoro national stadium close to completion, thanks to government funding, FERWAFA needs to supplement it by investing in state-of-the-art training grounds, upgrading existing stadiums and fostering the growth of grassroots facilities across the country.
These enhancements will not only benefit national teams but also nurture local talent, creating a sustainable pipeline of skilled players.
The $3.4 million [Rwf4.2 billion] allocated for administrative and guidance purposes should be strategically utilized to enhance professionalism and efficiency of FERWAFA. This money should never be used to fill the pockets of those in charge of the FA.
Implementing transparent governance structures, investing in qualified staff, and establishing effective football management systems will contribute to the long-term success of Rwandan football. If this is implemented, Rwandans and football in general will be the winners, and so everyone will be happy.
Furthermore, dedicating a portion of these funds to educational initiatives for coaches (for which Rwanda is still a long way behind), referees, and administrators will elevate the overall football standards.
Additionally, investing in modern training equipment and technology can give Rwandan teams a competitive edge and contribute to the technical advancement of the sport in the country.
The $800,000 designated for competitions provides an excellent opportunity for FERWAFA to organize high-quality tournaments that foster talent development and attract local and international attention.
Hosting youth competitions, women’s leagues, and international friendlies can enhance the competitiveness of Rwandan football, creating a vibrant football culture within the country.
With a dedicated annual budget of $300,000, women’s football requires special attention. FERWAFA should use these funds to establish robust women’s football development programs, including youth leagues and coaching clinics for women coaches.
Investing in the women’s game not only aligns with global football development goals but also contributes to gender equality in sports.
The annual allocation of $300,000 for capacity development should be channeled towards continuous education and training programs for players, coaches, and administrators. This investment in human capital will contribute to the overall growth of football in Rwanda, ensuring that the country remains competitive on the international stage.
While FIFA’s generous funding presents a unique opportunity for Rwandan football, the onus is on FERWAFA to implement a strategic and comprehensive approach that will enable Rwandans to see value for money. FERWAFA needs to make sure there is proper accountability for every dollar, after all, we now know how much they receive from FIFA to run the game on our behalf.
By efficiently utilizing these funds across infrastructure, administration, equipment, competitions, women’s football, and capacity development, Rwanda can aspire to become a consistent participant in major competitions, further solidifying its position in the global football community.
Rwanda shouldn’t just be content with being a friend of FIFA President Gianni Infantino but we make sure Infantino is proud to be our friend, and this can only be achieved if FERWAFA is doing the right things with all the funds that Rwanda receives. If we can do that, the kitty shall only increase.
From where I stand, the key lies in maximizing the impact of every dollar invested to create a sustainable and thriving football ecosystem in the heart of Africa.
