Game 6
REG 62-53 Kepler
It will be a do-or-die battle when Rwanda Energy Group (REG) and Kepler face off in what promises to be an epic Game 7 of the women’s national league finals at Petit Stade.
Defending champions REG had to force Game 7 after beating Kepler 62-53 in Game 6 held at Lycee de Kigali Gymnasium on Sunday, August 31.
A win for Kepler would see them lift the championship on their third season in the league but REG spoiled the party as they also look to retain the title which would be their third in four years.
Power forward Kadidia Maiga starred with a game high 21 points to inspire REG to the crucial victory, with Akon Rose and Kristina King Morgan contributing 17 and 8 points, respectively.
Shooting guard Henriette Uwimpuhwe’s 15 points weren’t enough to lift Kepler to the victory.
Julian Martinez’s REG are widely regarded as favourites after bouncing back from 3-2 deficit to level the series 3-3 with Sunday night’s hard fought win.
However, Kepler have already showed what they are capable of and only Game 7 will decide their campaign. Their only problem remains the fact that the club remains short of depth in squad which could deepen their struggles when the finals reach final sprint on September 19.
Both teams will take more than a two-week-and-a-half break before coming back to the court for the crunch game which will decide who wins the championship.
This break is due to the FIBA U16 Afrobasket which is scheduled for September 2-14 in Kigali.
Meanwhile, APR women concluded their league campaign with a third-place finish after Wednesday’s hard-fought 67-54 in the best-of-five third-place playoffs completed a three-sweep on The Hoops.
