Africa-Press – Rwanda. Forward Scholastique Gikundiro is optimistic her side Rayon Sports Women FC can build on their bright start to the CAF Champions League CECAFA Qualifiers.

Gikundiro was on target as Rayon made a statement and announced their arrival in style by edging out defending champions Ethiopia’s CBE FC 2-1 in the tournament opener.

The Rwandan champions made a dream start when Gikundiro struck in the 4th minute for the lead before half time.

Gabonese forward Eyanga Carolie Odette doubled the lead early in the second half.

CBE showed resilience and pulled one back in the 71st minute with a brilliant finish from Rediet Matios but, despite late pressure from the Ethiopians, Rayon stood firm to seal a famous victory and send an early statement of intent in the qualifiers.

“This is good start for us. Yes, I am happy to score a goal and it is a good start for our team. We need to keep the same spirit even in the next matches” Gikundiro said

“We have started the campaign well but we need to keep our eyes open because all games ahead of us are tough and we need to make sure that we win every game,” she added

Rayon Sports WFC is seeking to win next match against Top Girls Academy of Burundi, which can immediately give them a ticket to play the semifinals of this tournament where the team that wins the final will proceed to the finals of the CAF Womens Champions League.

The CAF Women’s Champions League CECAFA Qualifiers kicked off today at Nyayo Stadium, Nairobi, and will run until 16th September, with the eventual winner set to book a slot at the continental finals.
