Africa-Press – Rwanda. Rwandan side Gorilla HC (women) and Kenyan powerhouse Equity Bank HC (men) emerged winners of the International Genocide Memorial Handball tournament which concluded in Kigali on Sunday, June 1.
The tournament is organised annually by the local handball governing body in collaboration with the national Olympic committee to honour victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi through sports. It attracted clubs from different countries in the region including Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania and host nation Rwanda.
Gorilla HC won the tournament in women’s category after edging Ugandan side UPDF 44-36 in the final match held at Petit Stade Amahoro. They qualified for the final after seeing off UR Huye with a 37-18 victory in the semifinal while UPDF, in the same stage, eliminated JKT of Tanzania by 33-24.
Kenyan powerhouse Equity Bank were crowned winners of Handball GMT after beating Police HC 28-26 in the final on Sunday at Petit Stade gymnasium
Elsewhere, Equity HC won the men’s title after beating Police 28-26 in the final. The Kenyans advanced to the final after eliminating APR HC in the semifinals.
In the third place match, APR HC won bronze after defeating UPDF 33-26 while UR Huye defeated JKT 20-18 in the third place match.
