Tanzania 2-0 Burkina Faso

Tanzania kicked off their CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 campaign in style with a 2-0 victory over Burkina Faso before fully-packed Benjamin Mkapa National Stadium in Dar es Salaam on Saturday night, August 2.

Taifa Stars controlled large spells of the Group B encounter to record their first-ever win in an opening CHAN fixture—having lost both of their previous tournament openers.

A composed first-half penalty from Abdul Sopu helped the hosts to take a lead before defender Mohamed Hussein sealed the victory midway through the second half with a powerful header, sending local fans into raptures.

The result hands Tanzania an early advantage in a tough group that also includes Madagascar, Mauritania and the Central African Republic.

For Burkina Faso, the wait for a first opening-day win at CHAN continues, having now failed to win any of their four tournament debuts.

The Taifa Stars will now look to build on this momentum in their next group match, while Burkina Faso face an uphill task if they are to reach the knockout stages for the first time in their history.

The Harambee Stars of Kenya, another hosting nation, will begin their CHAN 2024 on Sunday, August 3, with a mouth-watering Group A clash against two-time champions DR Congo at the iconic Kasarani Stadium in Nairobi.
