Africa-Press – Rwanda. The International Cricket Council (ICC) is hoping to commercialize the sport on the African continent as they aim to raise adequate funds.
This was among the key points discussed at the ICC Africa Conference which ended over the weekend in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
The two-day event attracted over 19 delegates from member nations in Africa. Rwanda Cricket Association was represented by President Stephen Musaale and General Manager Emmanuel Byiringiro.
Briefing Times Sport on what transpired at the conference, Byiringiro said that not much funds are made from cricket on the African continent and the ICC wants to put measures in place to monetize it.
“ICC wants to get broadcast partners for tournaments such as the T20 among others. They also want to engage corporate bodies for sponsorship so that money will be pumped into the game,” Byiringiro told Times Sport.
Among other points discussed on the agenda, he said, were the 2027 ICC World Cup which will be hosted in South Africa and Zimbabwe. Leveraging Cricket inclusion at the Olympic Games was also discussed.
Concerning the 2027 ICC World Cup, Byiringiro said, “plans are underway to have a successful tournament because it is an all Africa World Cup.”
