Africa-Press – Rwanda. APR FC may have won the 2023/24 Primus National League title unbeaten in their last 27 outings but defender Fitina Omborenga admits the season has been tougher than one would imagine.

The army side won their 22nd league title after beating Kiyovu SC 1-0 at Kigali Pele Stadium on Saturday 20 through the solitary goal from winger Gilbert Mugisha.

Omborenga, who was part of the APR team that won the past consecutive league titles, stressed that he is overjoyed as his side retained the league title.

“The season wasn’t easy, there were ups and downs, some of the games were difficult but we sailed through and that is the mark of true champions. In all, I can say we did well,” Omborenga told Times Sport.

On a personal note, the overlapping right -back also said he is elated with his general output as he was able to rake in three goals during the 2023/24 season.

“I scored a couple of goals to help my team. As a defender adding goals to your games is unique. I want to do more God willing next season.”

On the game with Kiyovu, Omborenga pointed out that they APR gave a good account of themselves and went on to get the needed win.

“In the first half Kiyovu played well. It was a good game, we mapped up our strategy well and we scored the needed goal to win the game,” he added.

Not the season we expected

Despite winning the league title, APR FC Chairman Col. Richard Karasira insists the team should have achieved more than just the championship.

“I won’t say that the season went down the way we wished because we wanted to win every trophy that we were playing for. It didn’t go our way,” Karasira said.

“If things go well, we wish to finish the season unbeaten. I think it would be the best way to finish the season,” he added.
