Africa-Press – Rwanda. Legendary Burundian musician Khadja Nin on has described the UCI Road World Championships being staged in Kigali as historic for Africa.
Khadja Nin is among thousands following the global in the Rwandan capital. She followed Saturday’s women juniors and U23 road races from Kigali Convention Centre (KCC).
“It’s amazing what is taking place in Kigali. Today, Kigali is the world, the whole world is watching us, they wish to be us,” she said.
“What is happening here is beyond and this is definitely the best World Cycling Championship ever. Congratulations to all the people who organised it because it is a huge event. As Africans we are all so proud, thank you Rwanda.”
Nin’s words underscored the pride shared across the continent as Rwanda welcomed the global cycling community for the first time in Africa.
Day 7 of the championships left Spain Paula Ostiz claim gold in Women Junior Road Race while Rwanda’s Yvonne Masengesho and Liliane Uwiringiyimana finished 48th and 49th respectively. They both crossed the finish line 12 minutes and 20 seconds behind Ostiz.
Khadja Nin, 66, was born and raised in Burundi. She went and conquered the world with her powerful and emotive music, which stayed true to traditional African roots.
One of her most popular songs is Sina Mali, Sina Deni, a translated cover version of Stevie Wonder’s song “Free.”
