Africa-Press – Rwanda. Winger Gilbert Mugisha said he was excited to put his name on the scoresheet during Rwanda’s 2-0 victory over Madagascar on Monday, March 25, in a FIFA International friendly.

The APR FC speedy forward broke the deadlock of the game in the 28th minute, converting a superb cross-field pass from Kevin Muhire.

It was Mugisha’s third goal in his last five games for Amavubi having previously found the back of the net during Rwanda’s 2-0 win against South Africa in the World Cup Africa qualifiers in November 2023, months after also scoring the only goal that helped Amavubi hold Benin to 1-1 draw during an Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match in Cotonou in March 2023.

Mugisha, who had 61 minutes of action against Madagascar, has been enjoying his goal scoring form in Amavubi shirt recently and he is glad that he is making his mark.

“First of all, I thank God for the victory He has given us. I feel happy but I thank God because He is helping me. Every time when we are going to play, I prepare and work hard and then God provides because it is only Him who provides, no one else,” Mugisha told the press in a post-match interview.

The APR star also hailed the Rwandan community living in Madagascar for the support they showed his team and urged them to continue to throw their weight behind the team.

“We ask the fans to continue supporting us, the players are ready and we will, little by little, be giving them victories,” he noted.

Rwanda will face Benin and Lesotho on June 3 and June 10 respectively when the 2026 World Cup qualifiers resumes.

Mugisha has been a regular starter under Frank Spittler’s Amavubi and he has managed to deliver. However, he has been struggling with playing time at club level with APR FC coach Thierry Froger preferring to use Ramadhan Niyibizi or Alain Kwitonda at the forward’s expense although the two have failed to make it into Spittler’s squad in the national team.
