Africa-Press – Rwanda. Rwandan coach Djabir Mutarambirwa is still reliving the moment he won his first major trophy as a coach after helping head coach Etienne Ndayiragije guide Police FC to first Kenya Premier League ever.
Police were crowned champions of Kenya after following their 1-0 win against Shabana on Sunday, June 15. They defied the odds under the duo’s ranks after overcoming stiff competition from title rivals Gor Mahia who are second on the table with one match remaining.
Mutarambwirwa described winning his first major trophy as a coach as ‘something special’ and he cherishes the opportunity win achieve glory with a foreign club which was in the bottom places when he and Ndayiragije were appointed.
“No one believed that we can challenge for the title but we have done it and we have shown that it is possible,” he said.
“It is something that we wanted to achieve immediately we were appointed, remember we found the team fighting against relegation, they were rooted at the bottom, at first it never looked like, we could manage to haul ourselves from the position.”
The Mutarambirwa joined Ndayiragije at Police FC as assistant coach at the end of 2025. The Burundian picked him as his ideal right hand man in the backroom after working together at Bugesera FC in Rwanda.
“We are now celebrating. It is something we worked for, we really put in a lot of effort to achieve, and I am happy we have been crowned.” Ndayiragije added
Police will receive the title on Sunday, when they face Gor Mahia in the final match of the season at Ulinzi Sports Complex.
