Africa-Press – Rwanda. APR FC defender Clement Niyigena has been voted best player for the 2024/25 Rwanda Premier League season.
The Rwanda international beat teammate Djibirl Ouattara and Bugesera FC striker Umar Abba to the award during the Rwanda Premier League Awards gala held at Kigali Convention Centre on Friday.
Niyigena, 24, played 28 out of 30 league games and put up outstanding performances and scored three goals to help his side win their sixth straight league title. The 2023/24 award was held by Rayon Sports midfielder Kevin Muhire was even snubbed in the team of the season despite recording the highest assists in the league with 11.

This is the second time this season Niyigena has won a major inidividual accolade, having also been named the best player of the tournament during the 2024 CECAFA Kagame Cup held in Tanzania last August.
In other categories, Mukura Victory Sports goalkeeper Nicholas Sebwato won the best goalkeeper award while Abeddy Biramahire’s stunning strike against Muhazi United at Ngoma Stadium on April 19 was adjudged the goal of the season.

Darko Novic, who parted ways with APR with 3 games to finish the season, was voted best coach of the season while Amagaju FC’s Congolese forward Useni Seraphin was adjudged as the best young player of the season.
The top scorer award went to Umar Abba of Bugesera FC who netted 17 goals. The Nigerian striker succeeded countrymen Elijah Ani and Victor Mbaoma who shared the award in the 2023/24 season.
Concerning the best XI of the season, champions APR FC dominated with four players namely Clement Niyigena, Jean Bosco Ruboneka, Claude Niyigena and Djibril Ouatarra.
Mukura had 3 players in the team, including goalkeeper Nicholas Sebwato, right back Obed Uwumukiza and forward Boateng Mensah Agyenim. Rayon Sports had Youssou Diagne and Fall Ngagne whereas Police FC’s defensive midfielder Henry Msanga and Bugesera FC striker Umar Abba completed the list.
