Africa-Press – Rwanda. APR FC left back Fitina Omborenga has blamed Rayon Sport’s current woes on what he described as ‘lack of professionalism’.
The Rwanda international joined the Blues in July 2024 from APR on a two-year deal. However, he requested the club to release him before the end of his first season, claiming that the club failed to honour his contract.
While he had one season remaining on his contract, the player was made to pay Rayon Sports a reported fee of Rwf30 million to let him go where he rejoined APR FC on a two-year deal.
Omborenga told national broadcaster’s Rwanda TV that he wanted to win the league title on his first season at Rayon Sports to feel important again after APR FC decided to release him.
The Blues were at the top of the table and were favourite to win the title before some club officials since April started to accuse players, including the defender, of ‘corruption to get the team lose matches.
“I left APR after winning the title and I had an ambition to do the same at Rayon which I felt would mean a lot to my career. But then you hear that some club leaders are 100% convinced that I was corrupted to betray the team, as if they had caught me red-handed,” he claimed.
The defender claimed that these [corruption] accusations left him and other concerned teammates feel down and discouraged when the race for the title was in the final sprint.
“It is so unprofessional to say that I received money to get the team lose matches. I just wondered how much would a player received to let his team and a big number of supporters like Rayon’s down? It really made me feel discouraged,” he said.
Omborenga lost his starting place to Ally Serumogo as a result, prompting him to request the club management to release him citing club’s failure to honor his contract.
“My reason to request to leave the club wasn’t financial, it’s just that bad entourage and internal chaos that were happening at the club,” he said.
“I am happy that I was dropped when the team was at the top in the league, and in the semifinals of the Peace Cup. I couldn’t blame myself on anything,” he said.
Omborenga criticized Rayon Sports of acting unprofessional which, he says, has led to chaos on and off the pitch.
He said that problems will never end at Rayon as long as they choose to blame them on others instead of sitting down and find solution together.
“It’s like Rayon Sports blame their problems to others instead of looking the way of solving them. No player will want to play under this mediocrity,” he claimed.
With the experience he had with the club, Omborenga doesn’t see himself returning to Rayon in the future once he and APR part ways.
“The year I spent at Rayon Sports was not easy, especially at the end of the season. There were so many scary things that made me lose my focus and power. I can’t go back to Rayon Sports with the problems I have experienced there. That’s the truth. It is very difficult there,” he said.
Omborenga started his football career at SC Kiyovu in 2012 until 2016 when he joined Slovakian top tier side Topvar Topoľčany. He returned in Rwanda to sign for APR FC in 2017.
He also played for CSKA Sofia and Litex Lovech in Bulgaria.
