PNL: Five things we learned from Week 29

Africa-Press – Rwanda. The 2023/24 Primus National League week 29 games produced some intriguing results and breathtaking moments.

In all, 21 goals were scored across the eight league centres with Kiyovu Sports and Etoile de l’Est being the only teams that picked away wins.

It was a weekend action dominated by the relegation battle which has is becoming intense and could probably go down to the last day of the league campaign. Etoile moved above the relegation for the first time in the second round, leaving Bugesera FC and Sunrise in danger ahead of the final match day.

Times Sport takes a look at five things we learned from week 29.

Sadick Sulley saves Etoile

Since his move to Etoile de l’Est in January, returning from FC Dordoi in Kyrgyzstan, Sulley had a dry performance upfront but he stepped up on the big occasion, especially when Etoile needed him the most.

Ahead of what was a season-defining games against Police on Sunday, the striker carried Etoile on his shoulders with two spectacular goals including a 93rd minute winner as the team cruised to a 2-1 win.

The win moved Etoile above the relegation zone as they now sit 14th on the table. They need to beat Bugesera FC on their home turf to Ngomba Stadium this coming weekend or better still get a draw depending on other results to maintain their top flight status.

Sebwato produces another magical moment

Mukura Victory Sport goalkeeper Nicholas Sebwato has now developed a penchant for scoring goals.

Fresh from netting a 95th minute header for Mukura to snatch a late draw against Kiyovu in Kigali on April 25, Sebwato again showed his brilliance with a superb free kick to give his side the lead in a game they won 2-1 at Huye Stadium.

The Ugandan shot stopper’s knack for scoring goals should be commended as he can rescue his team in times of difficulties.

Gorilla FC are their own enemies

Gorilla FC could have defeated APR or better still got a draw to make life easier for themselves.

Against the league champions on Friday, May 4, they missed a penalty and squandered six glaring chances as APR came back to punish them with two goals.

As things stand, Ivan Minnaert’s side is not safe from relegation considering the fact that their final game will be against an unpredictable Mukura VS side. Gorilla FC have 32 points and a defeat against Mukura would be disastrous for them.

Bbaale came to the party in Blues’ comeback

The Ugandan striker, who was expected to propel Rayon to the title when he signed in July 2023, has had an average season but he duly stepped up against AS Kigali with two sublime goals as his club came from behind to win the tie 4-2.

Bbaale might have taken long to adapt to Rwandan football but, against AS Kigali, he showed glimpses of brilliance which he can build on for the 2024/25 season.

Pierre Ishimwe must ask for a loan move

Ishimwe was in post in the league for the first time this season as APR beat Gorilla 2-0.

He saved a penalty from Mohammed Camara and also made a host of crucial saves to keep a clean sheet.

At 22, Ishimwe is still developing, he is not up to the level of Ndzila but he showed his capabilities.

If he is groomed well and he can be a reliable asset as long as he plays regularly.

It will be prudent for him to seek a loan move to be able to hone his talent.
