Africa-Press – Rwanda. After booking a slot in the U16 AfroBasket quarterfinals, hosts Rwanda will face Group A leaders Côte d’Ivoire on Friday, September 12, at Petit Stade gymnasium.
Rwanda and Uganda secured the final two tickets to the last eight of the tournament, joining six others which qualified in their respective groups.
The two East African teams, however, had no guarantee of a qualification for the next stage, pending the outcome of the Liberia vs. Morocco game.
Liberia’s 74–69 win over Morocco meant that they finished with a 1–2 record and a -20-point differential in Group A but it was not enough to surpass Uganda and Rwanda, who had a similar win–loss record but with a higher point differential of +6 and -18, respectively.
They have now joined six other teams to the quarterfinals including three group winners, Côte d’Ivoire (Group A), Cameroon (Group B) and Mali (Group C), who all finished with a record of 3–0.
Angola, Egypt and Tunisia also qualified as second-placed teams in their respective groups with 2 wins and 1 loss each.
Meanwhile, Liberia (1–2), Sierra Leone (0–3), Guinea (0–3) and Morocco (0–3) all failed to qualify for quarter-finals.
All four quarter-final fixtures are scheduled to take place on Friday September 12, at the Petit Stade Gymnasium in Kigali, Rwanda.
The first matchup will see Cameroon take on Uganda at 10:00 am. Angola and Egypt will follow at 12:30 pm before Mali and Tunisia square off at 3:00 pm.
The last fixture of the day will feature Côte d’Ivoire who will be looking to upset hosts Rwanda before their home crowd in what will be a Group A rematch at 5:30pm.
The semi-finals will take place on Saturday September 13, with the tournament set to conclude with a final on Sunday September 14.
