Africa-Press – Rwanda. Rwanda will host the FIBA U16 Africa Basketball Championship (Afrobasket) 2025 which is due in September, world basketball governing body (FIBA) announced.

The tournament, which will unfold from September 2-14, will feature 12 teams —both boys and girls— from accross the continent.

The top two teams will automatically qualify for the FIBA U17 Basketball World Cups in 2026.

Over the past five editions, the tournament has delivered unforgettable drama, unexpected heroes and a fiercely contested balance of power between West and North Africa.

This is the ninth edition of the biennial FIBA U16 AfroBasket. The most recent edition that took place in 2023 was won by Guinea who beat Egypt 84-76 to claim their first-ever youth championship in Monastir, Tunisia.

Rwanda’s journey in the 2023 FIBA Africa U16 boys’ championship ended in the quarterfinals after they were eliminated by Egypt. They concluded the campaign with a fifth-place finish which they achieved after beating Côte d’Ivoire 74-62 in the classification match.

Meanwhile, Rwanda’s U16 girls’ team finished in 7th place after beating Guinea 54-43.
