Africa-Press – Rwanda. Rwanda is among African countries which will participate in the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 qualifiers commencing in November.

The East African country qualified for AfroBasket 2025 scheduled for August 12-24 in Angola, after finishing in third place of Group C of the qualifiers second window that took place in Rabat, Morocco in February.

The qualification for the AfroBasket meant that this will be Rwanda’s seventh appearance at the continental showpiece since 2007.

All the 16 teams that got the ticket to the AfroBasket also qualified for the FIBA World Cup qualifiers.

Joining Rwanda in the World Cup qualifiers are Angola, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Cote d’Ivoire, DR Congo, Egypt, Guinea, Libya, Madagascar, Mali, Nigeria, Senegal, South Sudan, Tunisia, and Uganda.

A total of 80 national teams from the four FIBA regions of Africa (16 teams), Americas (16 teams), Asia and Oceania (16 teams) and Europe (32 teams) will play in the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 Qualifiers.

Two games per window will be played on a home-and-away basis in six windows, except Africa who will play tournaments, to qualify for the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027. Each window will last nine days.

The draw

Before the World Cup itself, the path to qualification will be determined through a dedicated draw for the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 Qualifiers.

Teams from the four regions will discover their opponents as they strive to earn their place in the world’s premier basketball competition. This draw plays a crucial role in shaping the road to the final tournament.

The qualifiers draw will take place on May 13.

After the successful conclusion of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 Qualifiers, as the main competition approaches, a draw will be conducted to determine the groupings for the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027.

The event will define the matchups and provide fans with a glimpse of the epic battles to come.

During the most recent FIBA Basketball World Cup held in 2023, Africa was represented by Angola, Cape Verde, Egypt, Ivory Coast, and South Sudan.

Notably, both Cape Verde and South Sudan made their World Cup debuts.

All African teams secured one win each during the tournament, however, none advanced past the first round, leading them to participate in the 17th-32nd classification round.

The tournament concluded with Germany clinching their first-ever FIBA World Cup title by defeating Serbia 83-77 in the final. Dennis Schröder played a pivotal role in Germany’s success, earning the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award for his outstanding performances throughout the competition.
