Africa-Press – Rwanda. Mamelodi Sundowns skipper Denis Onyango and Wydad Athletic teenager Selemani Mwalimu are the two players from CECAFA countries who will feature at the prestigious 2025 FIFA Club World Cup in US in June.
This is the first time that two players from countries from the CECAFA zone will be playing in the tournament.
Onyango, 39, has already made 7 league appearances in the South Africa Betway Premiership with Sundowns this season, keeping 3 clean sheets and conceded four goals.
Mwalimu, 19, was signed by Wydad from Tanzanian outfit Fountain Gate FC for a reported fee of $300,000 in January and he is gradually integrating himself into the team.
The FIFA Club World Cup trophy tour has now reached Casablanca, the home city of Wydad in Morocco, and head coach Rulani Mokwena is optimistic that African clubs will excel at the tournament.
“I believe all the African teams will do well and make the continent proud-especially Sundowns.” Mokwena told the press.
Africa will be represented by Mamelodi Sundowns, Wydad, Al Ahli of Egypt and Tunisian giants Esperance. The competition will run from June 14 to July 13.
