Volleyball: RRA withdraw from African club championship

Africa-Press – Rwanda. Rwanda Revenue Authority (RRA) have pulled out of the Women’s African Volleyball Club Championship which will take place in Abuja, Nigeria, from April 3-15.

The team was expected to travel with APR and Police WVC who have already departed for Abuja on March 31, having pre-registered for the tournament some few weeks back.

Times Sport understands the club’s management wasn’t willing to spend resources on the competition after a disappointing league campaign where they were eliminated from the semifinals playoffs. However, club president Jean Paulin Uwitonze dismissed the reports, citing injuries as the main constraint that hindered their participation in the tournament.

“We finished the regular season of the national volleyball league in second position. Despite pushing hard, our squad had injuries to our key players, which led to unexpected performances in the playoffs. So, looking at the bigger picture, participating in the African Club Championship was something to reconsider,” Uwitonze said in an interview.

RRA lost libero Lea Uwimbabazi and right attacker Elizabeth Ijema to injuries before heading into the playoffs. This affected their performances as they failed to advance to the finals after losing the best-of-three semifinals series to APR.
